Using Material Culture to Interpret Enslavement
Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Noon – 1 PM, Online
Join the Interpreting Enslavement and Freedom Community of Practice to consider the challenges and opportunities around interpreting enslavement with material culture. Staff from the Royall House and Slave Quarters (Medford, MA) will share the ways they are using archaeological finds, as well as household furnishings, to explore the lives of enslaved folks and provide richer, nuanced interpretation of their experiences. Bring your thoughts and questions to discuss with peers!

Durag and Headscarf Workshop –
May 2 and 3 or May 23 and 24 , 1:00-4:00 PM
Come learn how to make a dye-dyed, hand-sewn durag or headscarf using natural dyes. The workshops are free and open to BIPOC participants. There are limited slots for each two-day workshop. If you are interested, email director@royallhouse.org.

Royall House and Slave Quarters 2026 public tour season will open on June 6, 2026.

The museum is open from 1:00-4:00 pm Saturday and Sunday. Tours of the mansion are guided and begin at the top of the hour. Admission to the Slave Quarters, which also houses the archaeological exhibit, gift shop, and restrooms, is free of charge.

Group tours can still be arranged. For questions about school tours, field trips, or group tours, please email manager@royallhouse.org.
