Reading Frederick Douglass Together

Saturday, July 4– 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.
Royall House and Slave Quarters (15 George Street Medford, MA)
We invite community members to gather at the historic Slave Quarters building to read/listen to Douglass’s “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” to honor the long history of Black activism, critique, and abolition.
This in-person program is free and open to all.

Royall House and Slave Quarters 2026 public tour season is open. 

The museum is open from 1:00-4:00 pm Saturday and Sunday. Tours of the mansion are guided and begin at the top of the hour.  Admission to the Slave Quarters, which also houses the archaeological exhibit, gift shop, and restrooms, is free of charge.

Group tours can still be arranged. For questions about school tours, field trips, or group tours, please email manager@royallhouse.org.
